Tumblr has made and official statement on twitter about what’s going on:
We’re committed to helping build a safe online environment for all users, and we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to media featuring child sexual exploitation and abuse. As this is an industry-wide problem, we work collaboratively with our industry peers and partners like NCMEC to actively monitor content uploaded to the platform. Every image uploaded to Tumblr is scanned against an industry database of known child sexual abuse material, and images that are detected never reach the platform. A routine audit discovered content on our platform that had not yet been included in the industry database. We immediately removed this content. Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms. We’re continuously assessing further steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team.
Please please please, for the love of everything, stop spreading fear in our community. They are not purging your blogs for having NSFW content. If your blog gets deleted and you didn’t have any of the above mentioned content, or something that could be percived as such, then please contact Tumblr Support to regain your blog. They can be contacted via the form here.
Please reblog so people stop spreading false information and cause unnecesary fear.
It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.
There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!
I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.
He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?”
“NEVER!!” the teacher exclaimed. “You will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.” Then he paused. “So would you like to know why should care?”
Several us nodded.
He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. “You practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?” asked the teacher.
“Yeah,” replied Tim. “Almost every day.”
“Do you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?”
“Yeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.”
“But why?” asked the teacher. “Is there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?”
“No, of course not.”
“Then why lift weights?”
“Because it makes us stronger,” said Tim.
“Bingo!!” said the teacher. “It’s the same thing with calculus. You’re not here because you’re going to use calculus in your everyday life. You’re here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.”
And I’ve never forgotten that.
Yeah it’s not so much making brains stronger but moreover damaging them with the sheer amount of stress and pressure schools put on students to understand this knowledge when half the time it’s not taught in a way the kids will understand or grasp well. It’s damaging us with irrelevant information that could be delivered and taught in a far more productive way if the system was more tailored to cater to the individual instead of grouping everyone as a mass. Not to mention you can exercise your brain in plenty of ways that you as a person likes that wont promote stress, anxiety and bad health.
People, kids especially, LOVE learning and exploring. it is the nature of human beings. but something about school crushes out individual and critical thinking skills that promote the drive to learn and excel. When a teacher yells at you for thinking out of the box and doing a math problem a specific way, it’s not exercising your brain, it’s putting it down and forcing it to memorize and recite and that is the furthest thing from expanding the function of the mind.
Your teacher had a good point that can apply to watching documentaries for fun or reading books for enjoyment, even joining a book club or a class you like but doesn’t count to a degree or your future. You wont necessarily use the information you gained from doing these things but you’re learning and thinking critically which helps your brain out plenty. But, to the whole of the school system from k-12, it’s just not applicable to say its helping our brains by putting us through such immense stress and pressure to succeed at things that in the end damages and scars us but won’t even be useful in the long run. Why put us through such turmoil for things that aren’t useful and that we don’t enjoy.
Oh and not to mention there’s a flaw in his metaphor (this is just kinda nitpicking). Weight lifting IS APPLICABLE TO THE FIELD OF FOOTBALL. No you don’t bench press other players but you have to wrestle and tackle and push through them, which is strength you NEED when playing. Calculus and other subjects meanwhile is only applicable, like op said, to highly specialized fields. Yeah it’s good to keep your brain sharp but classes dont do that, they push down critical thinking and promote memorization which isnt keeping the mind sharp at all. The whole metaphor makes no real sense and the point barely stands
When the CDC tells people to throw out their lettuce everyone rushes to do it. But when the CDC tells people to vaccinate their kids it’s a giant conspiracy and we shouldn’t listen to them
Tumblr….doesnt understand how people work. So there newest attempt to get back into the app stores good graces is to make its so that nsfw tags dont work at all anymore. ok so that means no porn right?
NO! Because bots dont tag and now People wont either! Because if tagging it just gets it hidden, why the hell would they want to properly tag it????
So all this is gonna do is clutter SFW fandom tags with MORE porn.
Best case scenario is a new term is made to get around it. Worst case is now theres just more unfiltered crap.
So being stuck in safe mode and deleting the NSFW tag….. I’m like…. That’s not going to hide untagged porn……. I’m
If I were a billionaire I would absolutely tell my secretary to send wedding gifts to anyone who sent me an invite regardless of if I knew them, because- A. I know how expensive that nonsense is. B. I would be a billionaire and when else am I gonna do with that much money? Honestly… and C. I would totally make showing up at random weddings with crazy awesome gifts my new stress relief hobby. “Congratulations random strangers! I admire your daring and stratigic planning. Here’s that 700$ tea set you wanted but assumed no one would ever buy.”
