Silence is complicit.

I guess open the borders or you’re a nazi? It’s not their fault they entered the country illegally.

If they didn’t want to chance the probability of being separated from one another, they should either:

a. come in through the country legally.

or

b. don’t come at all.

The system of becoming a U.S citizen is not perfect. That I know, but if they choose to not go the legal way and go down this route of sneaking into a country, it is on them when they get separated and deported.

Time for a Mexican that comes from a family of pro-immigrant activists to chime in 😛

And let’s just address the elephant in the room that “illegal immigrants” is just a dog whistle that means “Mexicans,” because how often do you see anyone talking about the problem of immigrants coming from Europe?

It’s not nearly as simple as “come in legally or don’t come at all.” First of all, almost half of all undocumented immigrants actually did come in legally and just overstayed their visas. Putting the difficulty of becoming a legal US citizen to the side, immigration courts are set up to fail and deportation just dumps people off in northern Mexico, regardless of their actual national origin (i.e: non-Mexican immigrants get deported to Mexico). There are even documented cases of actual US citizens getting deported because of misunderstandings.

There was a comedy movie from the 2000s called A Day Without a Mexican (here is the trailer), and it shows how the economy of California just collapses because no Mexicans are around to harvest crops, cook, wash dishes, or do any other jobs that nobody else wants to do. Along with several real-life events, this movie shows the hypocrisy of people who talk about how they wanna deport Mexican immigrants but still wanna use their slave cheap labor.

Also, here’s a fun fact: the US doesn’t recognize college degrees from most other countries, so there are tons of doctors, lawyers, social workers, scientists, etc who immigrated to the US and aren’t able to work in those fields. The US has a major shortage of doctors and nurses, but fuck all those Mexican doctors working in factories and restaurants.

The violent crime rate is also inversely related to the growth of the immigrant population (i.e: crime goes down as immigration goes up), they make up the backbone of our economy, and they deserve to not have their lives and families torn apart by immigration agents.

Thank you!

Being old doesn’t excuse being a bigot, now or ever

‘It’s just the way it was in their time’

They are alive NOW. NOW is still their time.

I recall a paper arguing that (a) reason older demographics skew right is because poor people die younger.

There’s been a storm warning in the netherlands

That toilet flying around was like 3 minutes from my house!

At least the port-a-potty had the decency to use the sidewalk instead of jaywalking

That’s not a sidewalk. That’s a bike lane. Arrest the damn thing

what was that about not insulting dutch infrastructure? cause this storm does it better than i ever could

Civil rights violations in the US today doesn’t look like the bad cops on TV, it more often looks like the good cops on TV

How many times in your favorote cop show have they kicked in a door and searched a home without a warrant?

How many times in your favorite cop show have they questioned a suspect without their lawyer present and after the suspect has clearly stated they don’t want to talk?

Special question to fans of Criminal Minds: how many times have the BAU purposefully taunted the unsub in a standoff to the point that they become agressive and the agents then shoot the unsub?

By the way, to be clear on the door kicking thing, I am very specifically talking about the following line I’ve seen countless times:

”Hey, did you hear screams/smell drugs inside?”

And like it’s always shown as a flimsy excuse, yet, still the right and good thing to do

The one where they make the suspect talk without a lawyer is so common it’s actually ridiculous.

Or the one where they get mad at a perp for having a shitty attitude/mocking them and end up losing their temper and using unnecessary force is always framed like the police had no other choice. Because the perp insulted their wife or dead colleague so obviously they deserve some brutality

also when the cops maybe don’t do anything wrong, but the show frames it as “if only we could violate human rights a LITTLE, then we could solve the case!” or even that the law is preventing them from doing their job. e.g. the stodgy old judge won’t give them a search warrant, the arrogant psychiatrist won’t hand over their patient’s information, the team has to do things by the book this time(!) because the FBI/internal affairs/the media are watching them.

the number of times the police stalk someone because they’re “sure” they’re the culprit, even when they have no evidence and their captain tells them not to, but it’s justified in the end because they wee right of course, looking at you SVU.
