In one episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine, they talk about how trans people have it difficult in prison. In the very next episode the sentence “Nothing is more attractive in a woman than the clear absence of a penis” is uttered.
It’s almost like B99 is a show made by liberals for liberals and its progressiveness is entirely performative.
Just want to point out since the post kind of glosses over the fact that the last sentence is uttered ironically by a gay character who is trying to pass as straight to distract a guard at a women’s prison. The running joke is that he believes straight people are transphobic and homophobic, so when he tries to pretend to be one, he acts that way. The joke is, no one around him acts like what he’s saying is off, making further commentary on how transphobic and homophobic our society is.
tumblr taking things out of context to vilify something good? its more likely than you think
This is the kind of thing I tell people when they go off on me being anti-captivity towards marine amusement parks. Zoos and “amusement” parks are totally different things.
Zoos help animals by having breeding programs like those mentioned above, marine parks harm animals by treating them like circus animals and forcing them to do tricks under incredibly stressful conditions and breeding for profit not for saving the species.
Apple: Literally design their phones to become an expensive toxic brick within a few years
Gas Companies: Actively work to prevent anything being done to develop, promote or in any way make green energy sources widely known of available or affordable to anyone because slowly murdering the planet makes them millions of dollars
Big Companies: Literally dump toxic crap where it will cause serious harm to the earth and the species on it
Governments: Clearly what we need to do to save the earth is make people pay money to use carrier bags so they can actually carry their shopping home
AND BAN DRINKING STRAWS
This, my friends, is called Individualization of Responsibility, aka holding the citizens accountable for the destruction caused by corporations
and we have to remember that this is also ableist. a lot of the reusable alternatives in the market are not as good as plastic straws. also, some people with disabilities have difficulty washing their utensils to begin with and banning plastic straws isn’t doing them any favors.
One odd complaint I’ve seen is that “AO3 hasn’t changed”. First, if something is well designed and working, it shouldn’t need to change constantly (does anyone actually like it when Tumblr makes random changes to things? no.)
Second, even at a cosmetic level, it’s just… not true? Not unless you haven’t been around very long.
AO3 in 2008 – the first decent cap from the Wayback Machine.
AO3 in 2009. Still in closed beta. About 5500 works.
AO3 opens for general signups! 2010. Also, our logo makes its appearance :3
2011 – the tabs appear at the top of the page. Things looking generally more tidy and less squished.
2012 – a more chipper intro page. Things shifted around a bit as well.
2013 – looking a little more classy now. Tweets available on the main page.
2014 – some more subtle changes, including adding the number of works and fandoms in a prominent place. 1.2 million works at that point…
2015 – look how much it’s changed! The categories move to the front page for ease of access. Recent news updates also on display. Nearing 2 million works…
2016 – I admit I picked this one because of the news update about buying a new server “after holding together mail with sticks and strings”. Nearing 2.7 million works.
2017 – cosmetically few changes but look at the works number – 3.3 million works. This was just about a year ago (October 2017) and the current number today is about 4.2 million. You can also see from the news post that this was when we were in the middle of upgrading to HTTPS, which was a difficult but important process.
And here we are at more or less the present – 2018 (September to be precise). I agree fully that if you joined the site in the last 3 years, you might not have seen a lot of cosmetic/interface changes, but that’s because people – volunteers – spent the previous 5-6 years hashing those out to get them into their present state.
More importantly, you might not have noticed the under the hood changes that necessarily come with going up by roughly a million works a year. You might not have noticed the updates to site security that came with HTTPS, and maybe you didn’t even notice the huge changes to searching and filtering over the past few months. I get that it’s easy to say “nothing has changed”. That’s because there’s a team of volunteers who are working hard to make sure pages keep loading quickly, downloads keep working as expected, searches find you what you’re looking for, and downtime is kept to a minimum. Without them, I guarantee you would notice a lot more changes at this rate of growth, and not for the better.
i would bring back superwholock, “GRAB YOUR WANDS,” dashcon, Tumblr University, “always reblog the creator”…. i would bring back all that shit in a heartbeat if it meant it would replace discourse and the tumblr userbase just constantly shitting on each other for meaningless Woke Points
i’m latino. and bisexual and a trans man. please don’t make assumptions.
people have misinterpreted this post massively, and i admit that i worded my thoughts badly. though i genuinely never expected it to get any notes at all, and it ended up being taken way out of context. i’ll just post the addition i made like 2 months ago after fuckin.. takashi0 reblogged this post.
Artsy depression: haunted eyes, good at art, emo hair and eyeliner on point
Actual Depression: bloodshot eyes, no longer trust themselves with pencils, has not showered in five days
Quirky OCD: organized books, clean room, color coordinated outfits
Actual OCD: Intrusive thoughts, flipping the light switch 8 times so you don’t stab your brother, picking holes in your skin
Cute eating disorders: Slim trim and beautiful, shyly refusing a second helping, dancer aesthetic
Actual eating disorders: Puffy cheeks and eroded teeth from excessive vomiting, hair growing over your freezing body and refusing to eat carrots because they’re too high in carbs
Adorable anxiety: just a smol bean, soft, must be protected from the world
Actual anxiety: crying so hard you throw up, shaking, losing sleep over a period after the “okay”
RPG PTSD: flashbacks, vietnam, u don’t know what i’ve been through kiddo
Actual PTSD: Buying your first pregnancy test at twelve, flinching at high fives, i can’t feel my hands where am I what year is it
Cartoon ADHD: look a squirrel, something shiny, fidgety loveable bufoon
Actual ADHD: rereading the same page over and over because it doesn’t make sense, hasn’t done the laundry in four months, hyperfocusing on a mushroom knowing you have work to do
stop making terrifying realities seem cute. it’s disrespectful for those of us who are actually struggling
Fucking preach.
Uwu smol baby autism: adorably awkward, huggable, acts cute when confused, has some sort of rainman talent and a perfect memory in general
Real autism: worrying about whether you’re interpreting people’s cues correctly/making your tone sound correct for the context, or whether they’re about to get wierded out and uncomfortable bc of something you said, sensory issues that drive you nuts, not being able to adapt to sudden changes in plans and freaking out, melting down or shutting down when stressed by stupid things
^
Reblogging for the autism part that is just too real
!!!
Honestly, all of this would make better writing anyway. If we wrote mental illness as it really was, people would be more aware. *sigh* sad how disconnected we are.
